Cost of living in Turkey for students: Istanbul and Ankara

Use a student budget with the same housing type, occupied months and included costs. The figures below are dated official planning inputs and university quotes, not a single price that every student in Istanbul or Ankara will pay.

The short answer

METU’s June 2026 Ankara guidance estimates basic spending excluding housing at TRY 8,000–15,000 monthly. For Istanbul, the reviewed Sabancı dorm schedule supplies specific 2026/27 room quotes. These different scopes must not be presented as comparable city-wide averages.

Next step: Choose a real room offer for your campus, add everyday costs, then calculate annual spending and arrival cash separately.

Make a city comparison fair

A campus dorm, private dorm and shared apartment do not offer the same product. Check meals, utilities, internet, laundry, deposit, commute and holiday access. If one price is a whole flat and the other is per person, convert the unit before comparing.

The Sabancı annual figures are on a nine-month dorm basis. Dividing the quoted examples by nine produces approximately TRY 25,517–42,328 per occupied month. That is a derived campus-room comparison, not an Istanbul-wide rent range. Summer housing and daily spending remain separate.

Worked Ankara budget: a shared apartment

Original illustrative case: three students share a flat at an assumed TRY 45,000 monthly. An equal rent split is TRY 15,000 each. One student assumes TRY 10,500 for other monthly spending, bringing their working monthly total to TRY 25,500 before separately itemised extras.

For nine occupied months, that total is TRY 229,500. If they remain for twelve months at the same assumed rates, it becomes TRY 306,000. Neither number is a quote or a guaranteed future price. Actual bills, furnishing, deposits and summer arrangements can change the result.

Worked Istanbul budget: teaching-year housing

Use a current offer rather than an assumed city average. With the listed Sabancı four-person Study room at TRY 229,650 for nine months, an additional fictional daily-spending allowance of TRY 12,000 per month gives TRY 337,650 for those nine months.

The calculation is 229,650 + (12,000 × 9). The daily-spending input is an assumption, and tuition is excluded. Add any required deposit to arrival cash; do not quietly divide an annual dorm bill by twelve and assume the room is available all year.

Arrival cash is not the annual cost divided by twelve

A student may owe several things before the first ordinary study month: an initial tuition payment, room deposit, first housing payment, travel and document costs. A scholarship paid later cannot necessarily cover an earlier bill.

Use a cash calendar with due dates. Treat refundable deposits as cash required now even if they are not a final expense. Keep an emergency buffer separate from compulsory funds, and do not count income from an unconfirmed part-time job.

How to update the budget when prices change

Keep the original-currency source, date and scope beside every price. Recheck the largest uncertain line first, usually housing or tuition, instead of refreshing many small estimates while leaving the room unconfirmed.

Build a stress case by changing assumptions you control. For example, a 15% rise on an assumed TRY 20,000 monthly cost adds TRY 3,000 per month, or TRY 27,000 over nine months. This is a planning exercise, not an inflation forecast.

If you fund TRY costs from another currency, test a less favourable exchange rate and transfer charge. Record the rate date so the next review can explain why the estimate moved.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a student need per month in Turkey?+

It depends on housing and location. The dated Ankara inputs and Istanbul campus quotes above provide scoped examples, not one national monthly requirement. Build the total from your actual accommodation and spending.

Is Ankara cheaper than Istanbul for every student?+

Do not infer that from unlike room quotes. Compare the same housing type, bills, commute and months, then add your net tuition and scholarship.

Does the Ankara apartment range apply to one student?+

The reviewed METU guide describes a three-person apartment. It is the whole-apartment monthly rent; a per-person share needs an explicit split.

Are these prices guaranteed for 2027?+

No. The source dates and academic years are shown. Recheck your room and university offer before committing to a later period.
