Student accommodation in Turkey: KYK, dorms and renting

Choose a room that fits your eligibility, campus and paperwork as well as your budget. A government dorm application, university housing award and private rental contract are three different routes.

The short answer

International students should compare the current GSB/KYK application category, their university’s dorm process and private options. Eligibility to apply does not guarantee a bed, and an admission offer is not a housing allocation.

Next step: Ask your university about its housing calendar, then keep one affordable fallback until the allocation is confirmed.

Compare the housing route before comparing the price

The best option is the one you can actually obtain and use for your study period. Ask who allocates the room and who can issue the documents you need.

KYK/GSB: international-student applications are a distinct check

GSB’s general information includes non-scholarship international students among categories applying in the ministry’s designated period through e-Devlet. A dedicated international-student application service is listed on the official portal.

The dorm FAQ includes international-student document and broader accommodation conditions. Check those and the current category before assuming you can apply. The existence of an application service is not evidence of an open period or a guaranteed placement.

If you do not yet have the required identity/login or residence evidence, ask the university how the timing should work for your case. Keep temporary accommodation available while eligibility or allocation is unresolved.

University dorms and scholarship rooms

Ask whether you must submit a separate housing application even with an academic offer. A tuition waiver does not imply a room award, and a room award can specify occupancy type and academic conditions.

Compare undergraduate and graduate room eligibility rather than borrowing a friend’s allocation. Confirm the contract’s start and end, holiday access, summer storage and whether your room is available through the entire period you plan to remain.

Bilkent’s international scholarship policy treats accommodation support separately from tuition aid. Use that distinction when comparing offers, without assuming every full tuition recipient gets housing.

Read room prices in their original unit

A quote can be per person, per room or per flat; monthly, semester-based or academic-year based. Write the unit before comparing. Ask whether meals, utilities and internet are included and whether extra charges vary with use.

Sabancı’s current dorm table, for example, separates undergraduate and graduate room types and lists a TRY 34,000 deposit, with a stated exception for dorm scholarship holders. It also shows annual and semester charges. This is an institution-specific example, not a national deposit rule.

Private dorm or shared apartment: ask different questions

For a private dorm, confirm room occupancy, meal plan, curfew/guest arrangements where relevant, internet and what happens if you leave early. Visit or request verifiable current room details before signing.

For an apartment, agree who is named on the contract, how bills are divided, who holds the deposit and what happens when a flatmate leaves. Confirm furnishing and heating arrangements; a bare room and a furnished room at the same rent have different arrival costs.

Original scenario: three students split a whole-flat price. One arrives a month late. They should agree before signing whether the other two cover that share temporarily, whether a replacement is allowed and whose name appears on each payment. Without that agreement, the monthly budget hides a liability.

Can the accommodation support your residence file?

Ask the university which address evidence applies to the chosen arrangement. A booking screenshot is not automatically the required residence document. For a dorm, establish who issues the formal occupancy record; for a rental, confirm the accepted contract and authentication process.

Do this before paying a non-refundable reservation. It is easier to choose a suitable arrangement at the start than to repair an unusable address file after arrival.

Build a housing fallback without paying twice

Keep a written list of application, result and payment dates. Where one allocation comes later than another offer, ask about refund or cancellation terms before committing. Do not assume that a future public-dorm result will reimburse a private contract.

Compare campus travel at the times you will actually attend classes. A shorter journey can protect study time, but the choice still needs to fit the real monthly total and available room, not only an attractive campus photograph.

Frequently asked questions

Can international students apply for KYK dormitories?+

Official GSB information includes non-scholarship international students in designated application categories. Check the current period, eligibility conditions and identity/document requirements; a place is not guaranteed.

Does a Turkish university offer guarantee a dorm room?+

No. Ask about the separate housing application and allocation process. Scholarship room coverage also needs explicit confirmation.

Are accommodation prices monthly?+

Not always. A quote may cover a semester or teaching year and may be per person, room or whole flat. Keep that unit visible before converting.

Can I use a room booking as residence address proof?+

Do not assume so. Confirm the accepted document with your university and the migration process before making a commitment.
