Turkey student residence permit and health insurance
Coordinate your student residence application with your university before your lawful stay expires. The online form, document handover, address evidence and insurance need to fit the same study and residence period.
Start with the official e-İkamet system and your university’s current international-student instructions. Universities may collect student files under the cooperation protocol, but the migration authority decides the application.
Next step: Ask your university which submission channel and document list apply to you; do not copy another institution’s appointment or handover schedule.

Follow the owner of each residence task
The workflow can differ by institution and applicant situation. Distinguish first application, transfer and extension before choosing a form.

Use the university’s process, not a generic appointment rule
METU’s current Ankara instructions illustrate the university-handover route: students complete e-İkamet and deliver files to its International Students Office on the prescribed schedule, instead of independently attending an assigned migration appointment unless instructed. That is a METU procedure, not a national Thursday rule.
Ask your own office how it applies the protocol. Save the completed PDF promptly, retain submission evidence and watch the university contact channel for missing-document requests. A form saved online does not by itself confirm that a complete file has reached the authority.
Organise identity, student status and address evidence
Build the file from the current list applicable to you. Typical categories are the completed form, passport/entry evidence, biometric photograph, active student record, payment evidence, address and insurance. Minors and particular applicant histories can require additional documents.
Use evidence of the place you actually live. A dorm allocation and the later residence-address document are different records. Ask what the dorm must issue; for rented housing, establish which contract and authentication format will be accepted before committing to the property.
Health insurance: match coverage to the application
METU’s October 2026 health guidance distinguishes public GSS/SGK coverage from private insurance and notes that recognised family/bilateral coverage needs evidence. It describes an early student enrolment window for public cover. Ask SGK and the university for the deadline and documents tied to your own enrolment.
A policy that helps with travel is not automatically sufficient for residence. Ask whether it meets the current residence minimums and covers the period you request. Compare exclusions, provider access, co-payments and activation timing as well as the premium.
Do not buy overlapping policies simply because different guides use different names. First determine whether a scholarship, parent’s recognised cover or bilateral arrangement already gives accepted coverage, and obtain the required proof.
Separate card fees, insurance and private service charges
Use the payment reference generated for your application and the current official route. METU’s reviewed 2026 student instructions cite a TRY 964 card fee. That dated institutional example should not be treated as a universal price for every year, nationality or situation.
Build three budget lines: official application/card charges as applicable, insurance premium and any optional private service. A private intermediary’s bundled quote is not the same as the government fee. Keep receipts with the application record.
Changes, extensions and graduation need a new check
Keep the authority informed through the required route when your passport, address, programme or student status changes. Before leaving Türkiye during a pending application, obtain instructions for your specific situation rather than relying on another student’s experience.
Before graduation, ask about the residence route and deadlines relevant to your actual status. A post-graduation residence possibility is not an automatic work visa. Treat any new residence application and permission to work as separate decisions.
The labour ministry’s criteria distinguish the levels: associate/bachelor’s students can be considered for part-time work after completing the first year; graduate students in formal education are not subject to that particular first-year restriction. A work permit is still a separate requirement.
Check the employer and activity with the relevant authority. This guide does not promise a fixed number of work hours, an automatic graduate job or permission for every placement. Do not use speculative earnings to meet an immediate tuition or arrival payment.
Store sensitive copies privately. A public or shared checklist should contain task status, not passport numbers or insurance identifiers.

Do I attend the migration appointment or submit documents to my university?+
Follow your university’s current instructions and any specific authority request. METU’s published university-handover process is an example; do not apply its schedule to every institution.
Is travel insurance enough for student residence?+
Do not assume so. Check accepted health-insurance scope, minimum coverage and period with the university and migration authority. Recognised existing cover may require separate proof.
Does a student residence card allow me to work automatically?+
No. Check the work-permit process and degree-level conditions with the labour authority.
What happens to residence after graduation?+
Ask the university and migration authority before graduation about your actual status and available route. A residence option does not automatically grant work rights.
