Begin with the programme, not the funding headline

The graduate scholarship page describes support for distinguished admitted candidates as well as a self-sponsored fee structure. Admission eligibility and scholarship selection are therefore different checks. Meeting a minimum grade does not guarantee either a place or funding.

This guide covers graduate routes. Undergraduate application tracks have separate rules. We do not label a new intake open or give an application deadline unless its route-specific official call confirms it. Open the current graduate admissions page before planning a submission.

Compare thesis, project and doctoral routes

The official admission-requirements page distinguishes these pathways. Use the table to choose which checklist to read; it is not a replacement for departmental conditions or an equivalency decision.

On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to compare all columns.

Research fit matters for a thesis or doctorate

Read the department’s research areas and staff profiles. Identify a problem you want to investigate and the preparation that connects you to it. A research direction should be narrower than “renewable energy” or “artificial intelligence”, but it need not pretend to be a finished thesis.

Keep notes on the methods, facilities or expertise relevant to your work. If faculty contact is appropriate for the programme, send a focused question supported by evidence. An encouraging reply does not override formal admissions or scholarship selection.

Check project-master’s requirements separately

The current project-MS instructions include a short introductory video, a purpose statement and a processing charge among their requirements. Those details belong to that route; they should not automatically be imposed on every graduate application. Read the current portal for the exact format and payment instructions.

Distinguish professional training goals from research-degree goals. Explain which programme skills address a real gap in your preparation and what work you intend to do with them. A project-based degree is not simply a shorter name for the same funded thesis route.

Read the funding duration and exclusions

The scholarship page lists tuition support, category-dependent stipend, accommodation and specified additional benefits. It separately states that the five-year direct PhD route has scholarship support for its first four years. That distinction needs a plan rather than a blanket five-year funding claim.

Do not assume every listed benefit applies to every applicant category. Confirm the actual offer, any remaining period, personal costs and support for family members before accepting. If self-sponsored admission is offered, calculate the real fee schedule rather than using a scholarship budget.

Use a route-specific evidence pack

Academic records must be complete and consistent, including the scale used for your grades. A calculator can help explain an arithmetic average; it cannot certify how KFUPM will assess a foreign qualification. Where official scores or direct reporting are required, follow the published delivery method.

Ask referees who have seen your academic work and give them the route details. A statement for an industrial project and a doctoral research statement may need different evidence.

A route decision example

Suppose an engineering graduate has a 2.8/4 GPA and is interested in both research and professional study. The correct question is not “Can I apply to KFUPM?” in general. Compare the published academic thresholds for each route and whether the application is funded or self-sponsored.

The applicant must not claim to meet a 3.0 scholarship threshold by rounding 2.8. If a different route appears academically possible, evaluate its programme fit and funding separately. Only the university can decide equivalency or an exception.

Submit through the official graduate route

Use KFUPM’s graduate admissions links to reach the correct application system. Check that the semester and programme in the form match your tracker. A previous April or June deadline shown on a scholarship blog is historical evidence, not a current invitation.

If no current route-specific call is available, continue preparing and ask admissions a precise question containing the programme and intended semester. Do not pay a private account for a guaranteed admission or scholarship.
