Find your deadline in the Cambridge Course Directory

For 2027–28 entry, Cambridge lists main university funding deadlines of 8 December 2026 and 6 January 2027, depending on the course. Its separate Gates U.S.-round deadline was 14 October 2026. The correct course page and Gates route determine which date applies to you.

Do not choose the later date simply because it is more convenient. Check the course funding deadline, any earlier course-specific requirement and the relevant scholarship instructions. Cambridge requires a complete funding application, including references, by 23:59 GMT on the applicable deadline.

Course eligibility and scholarship eligibility are different

Begin with the exact qualification and mode of study, not the word “Cambridge”. Check the Gates eligibility and excluded-course list alongside the department’s academic and language requirements. A course offer does not guarantee scholarship selection.

Applicants from outside the UK can investigate the award through the relevant route. Do not reduce the U.S.-round distinction to passport alone without checking the current residence conditions. If your situation is unusual, ask the funder before choosing a round or paying an application charge.

Use a combined application with distinct evidence

Cambridge’s general funding process starts in the course application portal. Gates has additional scholarship questions and a separate reference in addition to the academic admission file. Brown University’s current Gates guidance describes four short-answer responses; use the live Gates form for the exact wording and limits.

This guide does not reproduce an older single-statement prompt as the current form. Prepare evidence against the selection themes, then adapt it to the actual portal. A well-written answer to last year’s question can still be the wrong submission.

Build a four-part evidence bank

Before drafting, collect examples for academic preparation, course choice, service to others and leadership. One example can inform more than one theme, but avoid repeating the same paragraph in every answer. Distinguish your action from a team’s overall result.

The following is an original planning tool, not the official form or a scoring rubric.

Choose the additional Gates referee deliberately

Academic referees usually address preparation for the degree. The additional Gates reference has a scholarship purpose, so select someone able to discuss the relevant personal qualities with evidence. A famous name who hardly knows your work may give a much weaker reference.

Ask early and share a concise briefing pack: chosen course, your CV, the scholarship criteria, a summary of work they observed and the submission instructions. Do not write an invented endorsement for them to sign. Track receipt and keep reminders respectful.

Understand full-cost funding without assuming every expense

Use the Gates funding page and eventual award letter for the current maintenance allowance and any discretionary components. Distinguish core funding from support that requires an additional request. Do not assume an amount quoted for an earlier academic year will be unchanged.

Prepare a personal budget for the timing as well as the amount: application costs where applicable, document preparation and expenses before support becomes available. Partner or dependant needs require specific confirmation. We intentionally avoid publishing an unverified future stipend amount.

A practical submission rehearsal

Open each document as the reviewer will see it. Check course name, dates, file quality and agreement between the CV, academic history and funding answers. Confirm the correct referees were nominated and their materials were received.

Try explaining your course choice aloud without the phrase “world-class university”. If the explanation disappears, you need more course research. A convincing application ties a particular learning opportunity to preparation and a credible future contribution.

Teaching example

Test a course-choice claim

Generic: Cambridge will help me become a future leader. More useful planning question: which verified training or research opportunity addresses a gap in my preparation, and what evidence shows that I am ready to benefit from it? Write the answer before adding persuasive language.

Original drafting exercise, not an official Gates answer or a successful applicant statement.

After submission, keep admission and funding decisions separate

Save your application confirmation and watch both course and scholarship communications. A request for further information should be answered through the stated channel. If invited to interview, prepare to discuss your submitted evidence, course choice and commitment honestly.

Use Cambridge’s funding instructions, Gates guidance and the live application form together. The Trust’s current wording governs exact question limits, eligible courses and award amounts; university advising pages help you prepare but do not replace those instructions.
