VSRP is an internship, not a KAUST degree application
KAUST’s admissions page describes VSRP as a research internship lasting 2–6 months, with flexible dates throughout the year. This is different from admission to a master’s or PhD degree and its associated fellowship. A degree-intake deadline is not automatically an internship deadline.
The official page also describes eligible undergraduate and master’s stages, recent-graduate conditions and exclusions. Read those together: do not decide eligibility only from the word “student” in a headline. Project availability and your dates still need to fit.
Check the current requirements
The published minimum GPA is 3.5 on a four-point scale or equivalent. The page identifies third-year-or-above undergraduates and master’s students, and its FAQ permits graduates whose degree completion falls within one year of the internship start. Current PhD candidates, KAUST students and KAUST alumni are excluded.
For English, the current page lists IELTS 6.5 overall with at least 6 in each component, alongside other tests and exemptions. Check the live page for those alternatives and score scales rather than converting them yourself. Do not report a simple linear GPA estimate as an institution-approved equivalent.

Shortlist by project fit
Read several active projects before choosing one. Note the research question, methods, desired background and expected outcomes. Identify which of those you can support with a course, a project, laboratory work or code that you actually produced.
A broad interest such as “I like AI” does not tell a supervisor what you can contribute. A specific example can: what data you handled, how you checked a result and which method you now want to learn. If the project requires a skill you lack, decide whether the gap is realistic to bridge before applying.
On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to compare all columns.
| Project requirement | Your evidence | Question before applying |
|---|---|---|
| Method or software | Coursework or a small documented project | What level is expected at the start? |
| Subject foundation | Relevant modules and academic work | Does the project match my discipline? |
| Availability | Dates confirmed against your studies | Can I commit for the full placement? |
| Research goal | One focused learning objective | How does this support my next academic step? |
Budget with the confirmed benefits
The current VSRP page lists a monthly US$1,000 stipend, private accommodation and return airfare among its benefits. It states that internship applications have no application fee. Use the official offer for arrangements and any other coverage; do not pay an intermediary to secure a project.
Even a funded placement can require planning. Ask when support begins, what travel arrangements are approved and which personal or document costs you must handle before arrival. Keep an emergency buffer separate from anticipated stipend payments. Do not make a non-refundable booking on the strength of an application alone.
Prepare the right documents and referee workflow
The official checklist includes transcripts, a valid passport, CV, statement of purpose and a faculty recommendation. Its FAQ says KAUST contacts nominated recommenders through the admissions process; notify your referee before you enter their details.
A strong referee has seen your work and can describe it accurately. Send them the project link, your relevant work and the deadline you are following. Check status in the portal rather than assuming that entering an email address means a reference has arrived.

Write a purpose statement around contribution and learning
Use the project as the organising thread. Explain what you understand about the research question, which preparation you bring and what you need to learn. Distinguish a skill you have used independently from one you have only encountered in class.
An effective statement does not promise a publication or an admission offer. It shows that you can work carefully, learn from supervision and explain your reasoning.
A focused opening for a research placement
My course project involved building a small sensor-data pipeline and checking missing measurements before analysis. I am interested in this project because its emphasis on reliable environmental data would let me apply that preparation while learning a more rigorous validation method. I can describe my code and limitations, and I would value feedback on the experimental design.
Fictional teaching example. Match the current project and statement instructions using your own experience.
Apply to a specific project and track the decision
Use the official active-project search and its application route. The current FAQ permits only one application at a time. Do not interpret year-round recruitment as an unlimited number of simultaneous submissions or a guarantee that every project is available.
If invited to discuss your application, be ready to explain one piece of your work: objective, method, result and limitation. Ask about supervision, expected outputs and practical dates. Only the admissions team and project owner can confirm selection or arrival arrangements.
If VSRP is not your route
A prospective PhD applicant should investigate degree admission, not force a doctoral profile into an internship category that excludes it. An early undergraduate can use this guide to build relevant preparation for a later year.
Keep the project-fit worksheet: it is also useful for other research placements. Update the programme-specific eligibility and application route each time instead of reusing the same statement everywhere.
