Choose the route before choosing documents
This is a navigation summary. The current category-specific call decides the actual selection steps and documents.
On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to compare all columns.

First decide which MEXT category fits
The official Study in Japan guide distinguishes research students, undergraduates, teacher training, Japanese studies, specialised training, college of technology and Young Leaders applicants. Eligibility, education level, required examinations and training differ across categories.
Write down your intended qualification and category before searching for an application form. A research student's instructions cannot safely be reused for an undergraduate application.
Embassy recommendation: where to begin
A Japanese embassy or consulate serving the applicant's country handles initial recruitment and screening for this route. The available category, field, local opening date, documents, written examinations and interview instructions can vary by country.
Follow the embassy's official announcement for your nationality. The central MEXT overview describes the process, but a blog's global deadline cannot replace the current local embassy notice.
- Find the local Japanese diplomatic mission
- Check available category and field
- Read the newest category guidelines
- Prepare the listed examinations and interview
- Submit only through the stated local procedure
University recommendation: a different gatekeeper
In this route, a participating Japanese university recruits and screens candidates, then nominates selected applicants to MEXT. Not every university has a recommendation quota, and a university's internal selection is not the same as a scholarship being granted by MEXT.
Search the exact university department for an international scholarship route, supervisor or exchange agreement where relevant, the application window and documents. Write directly to the university when its official instructions leave a critical question unanswered.
Compare language evidence and examinations
The official MEXT overview lists Japanese and English examinations for some embassy categories, with additional subjects for others. University recommendation can follow different institutional admission processes. An absence of IELTS in a scholarship checklist is not proof that every course or immigration step waives language evidence.
Match the instruction PDF to your category and intake. Ask the embassy or university about test substitutions only if its published rules do not resolve your case.
Keep a route-specific application tracker
Use separate columns for scholarship category, embassy or university contact, intake, official call URL, deadline, examinations, nomination decision and university admission status. Save the guidance you relied on and check for later amendments.
Avoid paying anyone who promises a guaranteed embassy nomination or university recommendation. The final outcome is decided through the official selection stages, not by a private intermediary.
