Read fee status before the university name
This is a selected, independently checked route comparison, not a claim that every programme at each university is free to apply to. “No application fee” says nothing by itself about tuition, accommodation, admission deposits, financial-aid forms or the chance of receiving a scholarship.
The records below were checked on 20 October 2026. A next-year self-funded admission guide, a current international undergraduate route and a scholarship authority route answer different questions; keep their conditions attached when making your shortlist.

| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| No application fee | The named route explicitly charges no application fee |
| Conditional waiver | Only the applicants meeting the stated condition receive exemption |
| Payable after admission | Payment is delayed; it may still be owed |
| Free scholarship form | A separate university admission charge may remain |
| Fee not confirmed | The source does not establish a zero fee |
Documented fee-free routes: degree and channel matter
Shanghai University of Engineering Science’s 2027 self-funded guide exempts degree programmes from the application fee, while its non-degree language programme has a separate charge. Duke Kunshan’s international undergraduate checklist states no application fee for its 2027 Common App route. Neither statement establishes a full scholarship.
HUST’s official scholarship information distinguishes the Type A dispatching-authority route from paid Type B university routes. The free Type A route is not permission to ignore the home-country authority’s instructions or assume a Type B application is free.

Conditional and historical waivers: keep them separate
Nankai’s checked 2026 Type B guide states RMB 600 payable after admission and waived for Chinese Government Scholarship recipients. That is a historical, conditional record: applying for the scholarship is not the same as being awarded it, and the 2026 notice does not confirm a 2027 exemption.
Use historical entries as research leads rather than active recommendations. Before including one in a current application budget, obtain the new intake’s official fee wording. This small check prevents a list from becoming misleading simply because the year in its title changed.

| Institution | Named evidence | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Nankai University | 2026 Type B guide: RMB 600 after admission, waived for CGS recipients | Closed prior-cycle example; not an unconditional free application or a confirmed 2027 rule |

What you may still pay when the application is free
Make separate columns for application charge, tuition, accommodation, insurance, documents, tests, travel and any offer-acceptance payment. A university may waive the first column while the others remain substantial. Financial-aid assessment can also involve a service or evidence requirement separate from academic admission.
Ask what a payment is for before assuming it contradicts a free application. A tuition deposit after admission is different from an application fee deferred until admission. Also check the refund terms: a refundable deposit and a non-refundable processing charge create different financial commitments.
A five-step verification method you can repeat
Start with the university’s current admission or scholarship notice, not a copied list. Find the exact words about the charge and read the surrounding applicant category. Then inspect whether the notice names the intake and degree. A general FAQ may be useful, but a more specific current call can add conditions.
If the fee is absent, ask the international office whether it is payable, when and by whom. Record the answer with the date. Do not turn silence into “free”. If two official pages conflict, identify the newer programme-specific notice and seek clarification before payment.
- 1Identify degree, programme, teaching language and intake.
- 2Open the official fee or application instructions.
- 3Separate zero fee, waiver and delayed-payment wording.
- 4Check the authority or scholarship conditions controlling the route.
- 5Save the source and recheck before submitting.
Match the fee route to the scholarship route
Type A and Type B are useful labels for government-scholarship research, but they do not determine every university’s fee policy. One university can charge differently for its direct admission, pre-admission request and scholarship-specific procedures. Keep the channel beside the amount in your tracker.
For Pakistani applicants using an HEC or another sending-authority route, follow that authority’s current instructions instead of selecting a different channel solely because an internet list calls it free. Your academic application and funding nomination still need to be valid.
Build a shortlist with a reason for each choice
Use a short list containing academic fit, eligible degree, language readiness, current route and total application cost. A route with no processing charge is not useful if you cannot meet its subject requirement or it is closed to your applicant category.
Keep confirmed current routes above historical or unconfirmed leads. Mark a published future opening as upcoming rather than open. After submission, retain receipts even when the charge is zero: proof of an application matters independently of proof of payment.
